Element, Chapter One

The drugs don't work. They take the edge off but nothing can take away the pain completely. They work for a little while, and for that little while I see what it must be like to be human. It's almost like I build immunity to the drugs, like I wasn't designed to take them. Those goddamned doctors have no idea. They look at me and shake their heads like I'm a poor sick animal...
